September Birthstone - Sapphire

September’s birthstone is one meant to bring a great destiny to its wearer, at least according to Middle Age beliefs. Sapphires often appeared in court and were frequently adorned by royalty. In modern times, sapphire is the fifth and forty-fifth wedding anniversary gem and the zodiac gem for Virgo. Sapphire can be found in a wide range of blues, although the very finest are a slightly violet and dark blue, known as Kashmir blue. Sapphire is the second hardest stone and is said to protect its owner from fraud, ill health and envy. It is mainly associated with truth, sincerity, commitment, loyalty.

Despite being the most durable of gems, care should always be taken when cleaning sapphires. For best results, use mild dish soap mixed with warm water and soak your sapphire jewelry for 20 minutes. Clean the surface of the stone with a soft cloth and rinse clean with clear, lukewarm water.

August Birthstone - Peridot

Once a hidden gem, peridot is now the treasured birthstone for the month of August and a popular jewelry selection for people born in this month. With its distinguished and attractive yellow green color, peridot is also recognized as the sixteenth anniversary gem and Leo’s zodiac stone, representing fame, dignity, protection and success. Peridot was once used to attract prosperity and wealth and, by the Renaissance times, it became a love stone with the purpose of helping people find romance. Prior to that and as early as 1500 BC, however, the Egyptians considered it to be the gem of the sun and thought it could heal the heart.

Behind the Scenes at Wedding Day Magazine's Photo Shoot

Wedding Day magazine’s Summer 2011 issue is out and guess what appears on the cover of this new issue? If you guessed that one of our very own beautiful pearl necklaces graces the cover, you were spot on. In fact, it’s just one of several Martin Binder pieces worn by Wedding Day’s models in this issue.

We provided some of our best wedding jewelry for this highly anticipated issue and even went behind the scenes at Wedding Day’s photo shoot at the Gary Aquatorium in early May and snapped some special behind-the-scenes photos. It was cold and windy that day, but the models looked absolutely stunning in our jewelry!

The Martin Binder jewelry featured on the cover includes a gorgeous natural pink freshwater pearl necklace with a sterling silver clasp and a pink pearl dangle, a jaw-droppingly beautiful kunzite and diamond ring, and a dazzling diamond tennis bracelet.

The bride also wore a cascading freshwater and briolette crystal cluster on a silver cable chain for behind-the-scene photos taken for the magazine. Two bridesmaids wore cultured pearl and crystal cluster necklaces in sterling silver, with matching earrings.

"Shine Like a Gem" Contest Winners

Martin Binder Jeweler was thrilled to receive nearly 300 heart-felt entries for our second annual Mother’s Day Shine Like a Gem letter writing contest. Valparaiso Community Schools elementary students and area children expressed why their mom (or favorite lady) deserved to be honored with jewelry for Mother's Day. The winners received a sterling silver pearl pendant and earring set, compliments of Martin Binder Jeweler, to give to their mom on Mother's Day.

We’d like to congratulate the winners and their moms, and thank the community and the Valparaiso Community School for participating. As an extra thanks for participating, each elementary school with at least twenty-five student submissions received a $100 cash contribution that the school may allocate as desired.

All contest submissions are available for pick-up during our store hours: Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
